ZACHARY — The Zachary Community School District ratified the award Thursday of construction contracts for two construction projects at Zachary High School.

Contractor Percy J. Matherne was the lowest of nine bidders at $5,403,000 to build a two-gym complex near the school’s Athletic Academics Center and football stadium.

The building will include a gym for basketball games and other competitive sports and a gym for physical education classes.

Bendale Farms Inc. was the low bidder at $498,594 for a drainage project on the north end of the high-school campus.

The board added $33,000 to the contract for Bendale Farms to finish the job in 30 days instead of the 75 days in the original specifications.

Both contract amounts were lower than expected. The board had set $6.5 million as the gym complex’s budget and allotted $600,000 for the drainage work.

The board also plans to have construction documents ready next month for a 450-seat performing arts theater and an architect is drawing plans for a ninth-grade academy on the campus.

On another matter, lawyer Jim Boren, of Baton Rouge,  presented the Louisiana State Bar Association’s “Silver Gavel” to Lonny Myles, attorney for the board and Zachary City Court judge.

Boren said the recognition is “a very rare award” meant to recognize contributions to a lawyer or judge’s community outside the courtroom.

“It is an honor for you as a community,” he told the audience.

Myles said he requested the bar association to present the award to him at a Zachary School Board meeting because his greatest legal accomplishment was helping get federal court approval for Zachary to split from the parish system.

“Without Lonny Myles, we wouldn’t have an independent school system,” Superintendent Warren Drake said.
