Fire damages room at Westdale Middle
A fire at Westdale Middle School on Saturday morning will not cause any delays in the opening of school next week, according to Principal Sherry Brock.
The fire started on a table at the school at 5650 Claycut Road containing several machines (copiers, scanners, computers, etc.) in a teacher workroom, according to a press release from the Baton Rouge Fire Department.
The exact cause of the fire is undetermined, but some type of electrical malfunction is suspected.
The fire gutted the room and caused approximately $50,000 in damages before being brought under control at 11:26 a.m. No classrooms were damaged with only minor smoke damage outside the room of origin.
Two janitors working in a different portion of the school noticed the fire and alerted fire department officials shortly after 11 a.m.
