Trooper arrested after stopping judge
COUSHATTA — Louisiana State Police say a trooper is on paid leave after being booked with battery, assault and false imprisonment of a judge after a traffic stop.
Superintendent Mike Edmonson said Trooper Eric Schonfarber was booked Friday in Red River Parish.
He said State Police investigators don’t know what happened after Schonfarber stopped District Judge Lewis Sams for not wearing a seat belt three weeks ago at the parish courthouse in Coushatta.
The judge did not immediately return a call.
Edmonson said State Police began an internal investigation immediately on learning there had been a confrontation between the judge and the 14-year trooper.
Lt. Doug Cain, a State Police spokesman, said the agency doesn’t have a copy of the warrant and he doesn’t know just what the judge alleged.
