A 23-year-old man from the East Feliciana Parish town of Ethel will spend two years on probation for burning a pile of automobile tires, according to the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality.

DEQ said Brian Hawkins pleaded guilty in May to burning the tires and was sentenced to 24 months of probation and six months in prison, which was suspended. Also, he was ordered to pay a $500 fine.

DEQ said a sheriff’s deputy saw Hawkins burn between 75 and 100 tires in Ethel in May 2008.
DEQ, in a statement Tuesday, said Hawkins was in the scrap metal business and set the tires on fire to separate the metal rims from the tires.
