Atchafalaya exhibit set in Zachary

An exhibit of Charles Fryling Jr.’s photographs of the Atchafalaya Basin is on display through July at the Zachary branch library, 1900 Church St.

An associate professor with the LSU department of landscape architecture, Fryling also will give an illustrated talk on the basin’s plant and animal life at 7 p.m. July 16, in the library.

State park events
Audubon State Historic Site presents cooking demonstrations on the open hearth at the Oakley House from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and also invites the visitor to explore the history of Old West Florida from Spanish colony to early statehood from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Port Hudson State Historic Site holds Genealogy Week Sunday through July 19, with the staff offering assistance to visitors in researching their Civil War ancestors.

Lane blood drive
United Blood Services will hold a blood drive at Lane Regional Medical Center Friday from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The blood drive is open to the public and registration is not required.

The hospital’s Diabetes Support Group meets from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday; call nurse Sherry Brady at (225) 658-4583.

Lane Rehabilitation Center’s “Moving Forward After Stroke” presentation will be at 2 p.m. Monday. The center is at 4601 McHugh Road, across from the hospital. Registration is required; call (225) 658-6800. 

Big business
The Greater St. Francisville Chamber of Commerce has named Entergy’s River Bend Station as Business of the Month, saluting the nuclear power plant’s contribution to the economy and assistance in community projects. The plant employs more than 500 people.

Audubon library events
Audubon Regional Library presents “Papillion,” consisting of stories and Cajun music for children, at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Slaughter Town Hall and the Jackson branch library at 2:30 p.m.  Programs will continue Wednesday at the Clinton United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. and the St. Helena branch library in Greensburg at 2 p.m.

The Clinton branch will have stories and make “footbags” — toys to kick around — Monday at 3 p.m. 
More kids’ programs
The Baker branch of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library presents Wayne Houston of  the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Department at 10:30 a.m. Friday with a program on Louisiana wildlife of interest to children ages 6 to 11. Registration is required; call (225) 778-5960.

The Pride-Chaneyville branch offers children 6-11 the chance to hear the story, “Gunniwolf” by Wilhemina Harper and create paper plate shakers at 11 a.m. Saturday.  At 2 p.m. Wednesday, veterinarian Dr. Roberta McKowen will bring several working dogs to the library to show children 5-10. Registration for the programs is required; call (225) 658-1560.

Harpist Kat Winn demonstrates how to play the harp to children 8 to 11 years of age at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Zachary branch library. Registration is required; call (225) 658-1860.
