50 BR firefighters battle blaze at storage facility
A two-alarm fire Wednesday night caused an estimated $1 million in damage to a 125-unit storage facility on Old Hammond Highway, a Fire Department official said.
Seven units with 50 firefighters responded to the blaze at The Storage Center, 10555 Old Hammond Highway, department spokesman Barry Mounce said.
Three firefighters were treated on the scene for heat exhaustion, but there were no other reported injuries.
Mounce said they believe the fire began in the back of the complex, but as of press time Wednesday they had not yet determined the cause.
Officials shut down traffic on two blocks of Old Hammond Highway near Sharp Road as firefighters battled the blaze, which began shortly before 7:30 p.m.
As of 10:30 p.m., the fire was contained to the building, but was still not brought fully under control, the department spokesman said.
Most of the units in the metal, green-and-tan building were being used for storage, he said.
