Jindal signs refusal of health care bill

Gov. Bobby Jindal has signed into law a bill that protects doctors, nurses and pharmacists who refuse to provide health care on religious or moral grounds.
The new law will shield health providers from civil or criminal penalties, job loss or demotion because they refuse to provide certain services. That includes abortion, certain types of emergency contraception, human embryonic stem cell research and euthanasia.
Supporters of the bill said health providers shouldn't face retaliation from their employers if they refuse to perform care that violates their religious beliefs.
Opponents said the new provision could make it difficult for patients to access legal health services or learn about available treatments.
