WALKER — A man stopped by deputies early Sunday morning for erratic driving died at a Hammond hospital the same day, the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office reported.

Deputies stopped Donel Adam Stogner, 42, 34382 Duff Road, Walker, around 4:20 a.m. Sunday east of the town of Livingston on Interstate 12, according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office. The deputy who stopped Stogner suspected he was impaired, but no details of his impairment were provided in the statement.

Stogner allegedly resisted arrest for several minutes, and was placed in handcuffs after back-up deputies arrived, the statement says.

Soon after Stogner was placed in cuffs, deputies noticed he had a hard time breathing and brought him to North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, where he was pronounced dead, the statement says.

No cause of death was given.

Dr. Ron Coe, the Livingston Parish coroner, said he has completed an autopsy but cannot release any information on the cause of death at this time because of the ongoing investigation. He won’t have a report to issue for another four to six weeks, he said.

The deputy who made the traffic stop was injured while trying to restrain Stogner and was treated at a hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries, the statement says.

Deputy Perry Rushing, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, said Monday the investigation is continuing and he could not release more details on the investigation or the cause of death.
