Justice Hall of Fame to induct 7

ANGOLA — The Louisiana State Penitentiary Museum Foundation will induct seven people, two posthumously, into the Louisiana Justice Hall of Fame in programs Friday at Angola and Baton Rouge.

The events begin with a 1:30 p.m. reception open to the public at the Angola Museum, just outside the prison gates at the west end of La. 66 in West Feliciana Parish.

At 2 p.m., a ribbon-cutting ceremony will open the exhibit cases in the museum that illustrate the lives and accomplishments of the inductees.

A banquet and formal induction ceremonies will begin at 5 p.m. at Boudreaux’s Restaurant, 2647 Government St.

This years honorees are:

n Jeffrey F. Wiley, sheriff of Ascension Parish since 1996 and chairman of the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement and the Administration of Criminal Justice.

n Burrell J. Carter, of Greensburg, chief judge of the state 1st Circuit Court of Appeal and a former judge of the 21st Judicial District.

n Chet D. Traylor, of Columbia, a former state trooper who retired this year after serving 12 years as an associate justice on the state Supreme Court.

n Harry J. Morel Jr., district attorney of St. Charles Parish since 1979 and vice chairman of the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement and the Administration of Criminal Justice.

n Morris E. Easley Jr., Greensburg, state director of probation and parole from 1984 to 1999.

The posthumous inductees are former nine-term Beauregard Parish Sheriff Bolivar Bishop and Camille Gravel, an Alexandria lawyer known for his support of civil rights and as an adviser to three governors.

In addition to the Hall of Fame inductions, the foundation will award the Sheriff Harry Lee Memorial Law Enforcement Award of Excellence to Ouachita Sheriff’s Deputy Joe Smith. His 50-year law enforcement career includes service with State Police from 1953 to 1977.
