LSU coach Paul Mainieri has been named the 2009 National Coach of the Year by Rivals.com.

The honor is the third national coach of the year honor this season for Mainieri, who has also been recognized by Collegiate Baseball newspaper and Baseball America magazine.

Mainieri, who directed LSU to the 2009 College World Series title, was the Rivals.com National Coach of the Year in 2008.

Mainieri’s Tigers went 56-17, the second-highest win total in school history. The CWS title was the sixth for LSU and its first since 2000, when Skip Bertman led the Tigers to a national title.

The Tigers, who began the year ranked No. 1 in the nation, culminated the season with a 2-1 series victory over Texas in the CWS championship finals.

Mainieri has a 134-62-2 (.682) record in three seasons at LSU.

“Winning a national title is just a very special moment for me and I’ve thought about all the players I’ve coached at St. Thomas, Air Force, Notre Dame and now LSU,” Mainieri said.

“They’re all a part of this with me. I’m just such a lucky man to be the coach of this outstanding program.”
