4 N.O. firefighters hurt in Algiers fire
NEW ORLEANS — Four New Orleans firefighters were injured Saturday night while battling a blaze in Algiers, and investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire.
Five people escaped the flames before they spread to four buildings on Slidell Street near the corner of Verret Street.
Officials say one firefighter suffered second-degree burns to his neck, two were treated for heat exhaustion and another needed oxygen.
The names of the injured firefighters were not released.
The blaze was reported at 10:43 p.m. and firefighter Michael Williams says two unoccupied buildings were already on fire.
It took 70 firefighters until 12:07 a.m. to get the fire under control.
