The YWCA Greater Baton Rouge, in a news release, has announced two recipients of its 16th annual Racial Justice Award, which recognizes exceptional and creative contributions toward the elimination of racism.

This year’s recipients are:

  • The Office of Equity, Diversity, and Community Outreach at LSU. Dr. Katrice Albert will be accepting the award on its behalf.
  • Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and its Walter C. Dumas Scholarship Committee and Charitable Foundation. The Rev. Charles T. Smith, the church’s pastor, will be accepting the award on its behalf.

The recipients will be honored at a breakfast meeting  7:30 a.m. July 22, at Juban’s restaurant, 3739 Perkins Road. Guest speaker will be Loretta King, Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the U.S. Department of Justice. Admission is $25 per person. Reservations are required and may be made by contacting Peggy Cartwright at (225) 383-0681 or cartwrightp@ywca-br.org.

The LSU office (EDCO), headed by Albert, assists administrators, deans, and department heads in implementing policies and procedures to increase diversity and reduce bias. It also provides the campus and the community with evidenced-based “promising practices” which strengthen awareness, knowledge and skills for working and learning in a diverse educational community.

Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church awards its Walter C. Dumas Scholarship annually to three students from the East Baton Rouge Parish school system: one African American, one Caucasian, and one of another race (e.g., Asian, Hispanic, Native American). The scholarship program, begun by Smith in 2001, is intended to promote multiculturalism and unity, as well as to provide financial assistance to students, who are awarded $5,000 each.

The 2009 Racial Justice Award breakfast is sponsored by Kean Miller law firm and John B. Noland. For information, call Cartwright or visit the YWCA’s Web site at http://www.ywca-br.org.
