False River boat parade Saturday

NEW ROADS — One of the area’s most celebrated traditions, the annual False River Independence Day Boat Parade, is scheduled to start 1 p.m. Saturday.
In its 27th year, the theme for the boat parade is “Show Me Your 401(k).”
Here is a breakdown of what to expect, according to a news release from event organizer Branden Barker:
Judging for decorated watercraft and party barges begins at noon on the south side of False River at the two-story, octagon-shaped boat pier owned by Barker’s family.
Barker and his associates will do the judging. The pier is on the island side of False River near the Pointe Placid Condos.
The boat parade will begin at 1 p.m. in front of LA Express Boat Landing and Pointe Placide Condos.
The parade route will follow the island side of False River for several miles.
Trophies will be awarded, including: “Best Decorated Party Barge,” “Admiral’s Trophy,” “Founder’s Trophy,” “Shoulda Gotta Trophy,” “Best Decorated Small Craft” and “Best Decorated Pier.”
Lionel Kleinpeter started what was then a fairly small boat parade 27 years ago before passing the torch in 2004.
Kleinpeter will be on hand Saturday as a judge and also to award one lucky participant the coveted “Founder’s Trophy.”
Slingshots for tossing water balloons or other objects — a parade tradition — are not prohibited by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Barker said.
But Barker requests that participants and spectators use “common safety sense,” when hurling water balloons and exercise general restraint during the parade to avoid injury.
