Get there early for fireworks, police advise
Anyone planning to attend Saturday’s fireworks show in downtown Baton Rouge should show up early, police said Thursday.
Sgt. Don Kelly, a department spokesman, warns heavy traffic may force police to close interstate exit ramps. Ice chests, barbecue pits, tents and pets are not allowed at the event and crowds will be asked to leave immediately after the fireworks display is over, Kelly said.
In addition to city police, the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office, City Constable’s Office and Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections will be present to ensure crowd safety, Kelly said.
Two Mobile Command Posts will be positioned on River Road.
“Law enforcement will strictly enforce the law against anyone found firing a gun in the air,” he said.
Fireworks are illegal in East Baton Rouge Parish, Kelly said.
Anyone found with fireworks will have the material confiscated and could face charges.
