Funds to help create oyster reefs off La. coast
A Louisiana environmental group received $4 million in stimulus money from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for creation of oyster reefs for shoreline protection purposes.
The Nature Conservancy of Louisiana received the grant to build the reefs along 3.5 miles of shoreline in Biloxi Marsh and Grand Isle, according to a news release Tuesday.
The project will involve filling triangle structures of steel with oyster shell and placing them in front of shorelines in Louisiana to encourage the growth of oyster reefs.
These reefs can provide protection from shoreline erosion and create fish habitat, The Nature Conservancy reported.
The state also received $3 million for the Mississippi River Sediment Delivery System restoration project, according to a press release from the Governor’s Office. The money will be added to the $28.3 million in state and federal money in order to increase the size of the project, according to the press release.
