Man, 44, arrested in slaying attempt
SPRINGFIELD — Deputies arrested a man accused of beating and stabbing a friend, but later calling deputies about her welfare in an apparent attempt to throw off investigators, the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office said Friday.
Terry Pooler, 44, 31506 S. Bell St., Springfield, called deputies about 5:39 a.m. Wednesday from the L&W Grocery on La. 441 near Holden, deputies said in a statement.
Pooler told deputies he found blood at his friend’s home on McCarroll Road but could not find her and rode his bicycle to the grocery to call for help, deputies said.
But deputies said they received a completely different story from the victim, Doretha Pea, of Springfield, when they found her covered in blood with stab wounds to her neck and hands.
Deputies quoted the victim as telling them that Pooler beat and stabbed her, then left her for dead in the yard. Pea said she made her way back into her house, where she lost consciousness, deputies said.
Perry Rushing, sheriff’s chief of operations, said deputies seized Pooler’s pants, which had blood on them, as evidence in the case.
Pooler was arrested and booked into Livingston Parish Detention Center on a single count of attempted second-degree murder and had bond set at $500,000, deputies said.
Pea was taken to North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond and is expected to make a full recovery, deputies said.
