Zachary school plans approved
ZACHARY — The City Council on Tuesday approved site plans for Zachary High School’s new gymnasium complex, performing arts theater and School Board office.
Chip Mills, the city’s development coordinator, told the council during a public hearing prior to the vote, the plans for the gymnasium building and theater meet or exceed the city’s code requirements, with the exception of landscaping.
The two buildings will take up so much space that it is “physically not possible … and it would be awkward” to meet all of the landscaping criteria, Mills said.
The School Board building site, however, preserves trees and azaleas, which provide a buffer and vegetation to the property, Mills said.
Mills and Abigail Brown, a school construction consultant with CSRS Inc., both told the council they are continuing to meet with the public to address drainage, security and other residents’ concerns.
Suzanne Ballad, a resident of Myrtle Hill Avenue, said she was particularly concerned about landscaping and safety issues. Another resident, Charles Duplechain, representing 37th Street homeowners, said he wanted to make certain that the city was following “smart growth” plans.
Councilman Randy Bouley said long-lasting city development and communicating smart growth area always a “challenging project.”
Also Tuesday, the council approved a site plan for the location of “The Mill” restaurant, a new facility opening in the Commerce Center on Mt. Pleasant Road.
Charles and Delores Noto, owners of NoToCo Industries of Baton Rouge, said they plan for The Mill to be a family restaurant with a historical architectural style.
Noto, owners of the former Baton Rouge restaurant, Primos, said they now reside in Zachary.
In other business, the council introduced several ordinances, including allowing firefighters and police officers — but not the public — to solicit donations for charitable organizations on the city’s streets.
Council members also introduced an ordinance to reduce the speed limit in Richland Subdivision from 35 mph to 25 mph.
