HAMMOND — Tangipahoa Parish sheriff’s deputies arrested a man on a marijuana cultivation count after they found 26 marijuana plants growing behind his home northwest of Hammond, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies arrived at the home of Terrel Burton, 28, 46406 Drake Road, Hammond, Saturday on an unrelated matter. Deputies were looking for a man believed to have stolen two dirt bikes in Livingston Parish, deputies said in a statement.

The bikes were on Drake Road on Saturday in Tangipahoa Parish, deputies said. The road is near the Livingston Parish line.

Sheriff’s deputies in Livingston and Tangipahoa parishes caught up with the riders and were led to the man believed to have stolen the bikes, Nicholas Sturdavant, 19, of Kellie Drive, Hammond, deputies said.

Sturdavant was at Burton’s home and detained Saturday, deputies said.

After that happened, Burton told deputies he did not have any stolen property and told deputies they could look around, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies did look around and found the marijuana plants, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The investigation of Burton, Sturdavant and the juvenile dirt bike riders is ongoing and additional charges could be brought, deputies said.
