Camper shot in leg near Tangipahoa River
HAMMOND — Tangipahoa Parish sheriff’s deputies are investigating a shooting near the Tangipahoa River on Saturday evening that occurred because of an argument over firewood, the Sheriff’s Office said Monday.
Witnesses said three men and two women approached campers east of Hammond at Carpenter’s Landing before 7:30 p.m., deputies said in a statement.
Two of the men in the group of five threatened the campers with .22-caliber guns, deputies said. One gun was wrestled away, thrown in nearby woods and later recovered by deputies.
The other man with a gun fired it and hit one of the campers in the leg, deputies said.
Witnesses who had parked their four-wheelers at the top of Carpenter’s Landing saw the shooting and also saw the five people leave, but could not give descriptions, deputies said.
The victim was taken to North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond and later released.
Anyone with information on the incident can call Detective Gary Baham at (985) 902-2088.
