Recall petition filed against Livingston councilman
A petition has been filed to recall Livingston Parish Councilman Jimmie McCoy, the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office confirmed Thursday.
John Warren Sr., of Watson, has 180 days from the date of filing to collect the signatures of one-third of the registered voters in McCoy’s district, said Jacques Berry, press secretary for the secretary of state.
Warren filed the recall petition on June 3, Berry said.
If Warren feels he has collected enough names, he can submit the petition to the Livingston Parish registrar of voters, whose job it is to confirm the signatures, Berry said.
If the needed number of signatures is confirmed, the registrar submits the petition to the governor, who has authority to call an election in which voters would either oust McCall or retain him in office.
McCoy, the District 2 councilman, represents the Watson area and serves as chairman of the Parish Council.
He has been a central figure in the controversy over accepting private gravel roads into the parish maintenance system.
In a battle with Parish President Mike Grimmer, McCoy and a majority of council members have voted to blacktop many of those roads once they have been brought into the parish’s road system.
Neither Warren nor McCoy could be reached for comment Thursday.
