Vermilion boards to asphalt driveway
ABBEVILLE — The Vermilion Parish School Board entered into an intergovernmental agreement with the Vermilion Parish Police Jury to asphalt the driveway of the board-owned Matte Property at a meeting Thursday.
Supervisor of Maintenance Jerome Puyau recommended the move because of the increased use of the property near Erath and complaints of neighbors.
“The issue at hand arose when an adjoining neighbor placed several complaints about being inundated by dust twice a day, five days a week,” he said. “We were contacted by the Police Jury, which offered to alleviate the problem by asphalting the driveway.”
Puyau said the property was, at a time, not a high priority, but it is now being used more and more for sporting events.
He also said there were School Board developments planned near the property that would also require use of the driveway, making the project a necessity.
“The property will be used daily for the next several years,” Puyau said. “We should accept the donation of the asphalt.”
The measure passed 7-1 with member Angela Faulk voting no without explanation.
In other business, the board accepted the substantial completion of the demolition and asbestos abatement of Henry Elementary School.
“The building was demolished and is back to a green area,” Puyau said. “It is a beautiful site for the community. The project is 100 percent done.”
