Senate supports lobbying cap change
A bill that would loosen the limits on when lobbyists can exceed a $50 cap as they wine and dine legislators and other public officials received approval from the Senate on Tuesday.
House Bill 591, sponsored by Rep. Noble Ellington, D-Winnsboro, originally sought to broaden the opportunity for the more expensive entertaining while legislators and other officials attend state, regional or national conferences.
The Louisiana Board of Ethics had voted to oppose the House-passed legislation that it said would have allowed individuals to be wined and dined lavishly at events that were not held in conjunction with the conference.
The legislation was tightened in a Senate committee so the $50 limit could only be exceeded when 10 or more people associated with the organization are invited to a gathering at a conference.
The Senate passed the measure 33-4.
Since it was amended on the Senate side, the House has to agree on the changes before it can head to the governor.
