The East Baton Rouge Recreation and Park Commission voted unanimously Thursday to spend $709,000 on 50 acres in Central to build a sports park.

The proposed park, the Central Community Sports Park, will be built at Hooper and Lovett roads and feature ball fields, a lake, walking and jogging trails, and parking facilities.

According to the park’s master plans, designed by CSRS Inc., the total cost of the project is $7.3 million.

The commission also voted to spend $130,000 for the design and construction of a street and some drainage work for the new park in Central. Those expenses will be shared with the landowner and developer of the 50 acres.

BREC Superintendent Bill Palmer said $65,000 will go toward drainage and earth work, $55,000 will be paid to complete asphalt and paving work, and $10,000 will be used for the formal dedication of the street once it is accepted as a public street by the city-parish.

Palmer said BREC officials hope to put out a construction bid for the park soon.

In May 2008, Central, led by Republican state Rep. Bodi White, dropped a legislative bid to break away from the parish park system and form its own recreation district after working  out  a verbal agreement.

The deal was reached after BREC agreed to accelerate some of its parks and recreation projects planned for the Central  area.

In other business Thursday, the commission voted to spend $98,300 to replace the air conditioning at the Independence Park Theatre.

Palmer said the air conditioning failed recently and caused serious problems with scheduled recitals, day camps and other theatre rentals.

Since the air conditioning failed, Palmer said, BREC has been renting a unit for $1,400 a week.
