PORT ALLEN — The Governor’s Office approved a grant to pay for connecting nearly four dozen additional households to the Brusly community sewer collection system.

The Louisiana Community Development Block Grant will fund a $587,210 project to add about 45 households along Red Hat Road and Red Eye Lane to the system, according to a letter from the Governor’s Office.

Parish President Riley “Peewee” Berthelot said at Thursday’s West Baton Rouge Parish Council meeting that the parish has been waiting for the Governor’s Office to sign off on the grant for years.

In other business, the parish’s finance director, Phillip A. Bourgoyne, asked the council to consider granting funds to Capitol Area Services to pay for a case worker’s salary.

Bourgoyne said the case worker, who spends half her time working in Iberville Parish, has previously been paid by a state grant that will soon run out.

He suggested the council either split the total cost of $57,000 with Iberville Parish or pay the full amount for the employee to work full-time in West Baton Rouge Parish.

Councilman Gary Spillman said he would rather the parish employ the worker directly than through grants to Capital Area Services.
