Tangipahoa may change inspection rule
AMITE — The Tangipahoa Parish Council decided Monday to consider proposed changes to building code requirements on new construction projects for separate monitoring of building, mechanical, electrical and plumbing work.
Andy Currier, the parish’s building official, said the parish’s system of sending out one building inspector to examine all aspects of construction is not in compliance with state law.
In addition, having different people inspecting different installations provides more than one pair of eyes, therefore, more oversight, he said.
The new fees called for in the proposal would assist with payment of salaries for the additional inspectors.
All contractors and subcontractors working in the parish must be registered with the parish, Currier said.
Council President Carlo Bruno said that while the parish cannot “regulate people doing things on the cheap,” the public should know that if anything goes wrong they have little recourse.
A public hearing on the proposed changes will take place prior to the June 22 council meeting. A vote on the issue will follow the hearing.
In other business, the council approved a resolution requesting federal highway safety money for placement throughout the parish of raised pavement markers and rumble (off road warning) strips.
McKneely said the state indicated that as much as $500,000 is available for parish use.
