ABBEVILLE — Bobby Rizzuto, assistant superintendent of curriculum for the Vermilion Parish School Board, on Thursday officially honored nine schools for exceeding federal school growth expectations last school year.

Schools being honored for “Recognized Academic Growth,” meaning the academic centers met or slightly exceeded federal expectations, were Abbeville High, Erath High, Cecil Picard Elementary and Rene Rost Elementary schools.

Those honored for “Exemplary academic Growth,” which means they exceeded goals by more than 2.5 percent, were Indian Bayou/Forked Island Elementary, E. Broussard Elementary, Jesse Owens Elementary, 7th Ward Elementary and Erath Middle schools. “These accomplishments were truly a team effort,” Rizzuto said.

“These schools had to improve growth in nine sub-groups.”

Board President Chris Mayard also commended the schools and thanked the teachers and principals for their hard work.

In other business, the board appointed four vice principals for the upcoming school year:

  • Christine Menard at Eaton Park Elementary.
  • Dana Primeaux to assistant at Gueydan High.
  • Kim Etieto part-time assistant principal/teacher at LeBlanc Elementary.
  • Natalie Hebert part-time assistant principal/teacher at Dozier Elementary.
