Iberia board revises pupil progression plan

NEW IBERIA — The New Iberia School Board approved revisions and handed out recognitions during its regular Wednesday night meeting.

The board approved the Textbook/Education Committee’s recommended revisions to the Iberia Parish Pupil Progression Plan for the next school year. The revision limits the number of years a student can be retained, or held back, for each grade.

The revision states students should not be retained between the grades of K-3 for more than one school year, and for not more than two years between the grades of 4-6.

In the case of a student who is being considered for retention, or grade-level failure, the board plans to initiate a Review of Placement Meeting and to develop a plan for intervention that needs to be documented and developed on the Review of Placement Form.

These new policies are designed to help prevent a student from being held back. But they cannot override a failure from an attendance record of less than 160 days or nullify high stakes promotional policies with the fourth-grade LEAP exam.

“Retention has not proven to be effective,” said Superintendent Dale Henderson.

Carey Laviolette, assistant supervisor of instruction, said that some students may need the help of an interventionist to “remediate their deficiencies.”

Ten different Iberia Parish schools were recognized for “Recognized Academic Growth” — based on meeting or beating their growth targets in the 2008 School Performance Scores. They were Sugarland Elementary, Daspit Road Elementary, and Jeanerette Elementary.

Also, Loreauville Elementary, Delcambre Elementary, Park Elementary, Center Street Elementary, Magnolia Elementary, Jeanerette Middle, and the now-defunct Avery Island Elementary were all recognized as having “Exemplary Academic Growth” by beating their growth target by five or more points.

“It’s always a special time when we have an opportunity to recognize our employees,” Henderson said.

The next regular board meeting will be held June 17 at North Lewis Elementary School so members can inspect the substantial completion of the project.
