Two killed when SUV hits ATV
BAYOU SORREL — Two men died Tuesday night after an all terrain vehicle they were riding on was struck from behind by a sport utility vehicle, Louisiana State Police said today.
Randy Hanchett Jr., 29, of Livonia, was riding on the back of an ATV driven by Brett Canella, 45, of Plaquemine, south on La. 75 when a Jeep Cherokee struck the ATV, throwing both men, State Police spokesman Trooper Russell Graham said in a news release.
Hanchett was pronounced dead at the scene while Canella was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge where he died from his injuries, Graham said.
The force of the crash caused the ATV driven by Canella to strike the rear of another ATV on the roadway driven by Henry Rineheart, 33, of Plaquemine, who suffered minor injuries, Graham said.
Henry Rineheart’s relative, Larry Rineheart Jr., 28, of Plaquemine, was driving the Jeep that struck the ATV Canella was driving, Graham said. Larry Rineheart was not injured, he said.
Moments later, Mary Weatherford, 48, of Plaquemine, driving a pickup truck north on La. 75, struck the Jeep which had come to a stop on the highway, Graham said. Weatherford suffered minor injuries, he said.
