Man arrested in Tangipahoa thefts
HAMMOND — Tangipahoa Parish sheriff’s deputies arrested a man they believe is connected to a series of vehicle burglaries in the Independence and Tickfaw areas over the past two weeks, the Sheriff’s Office said today in a release.
Lester Gary Anthony Jr., 36, 55308 Mashon Road, Independence, was arrested Thursday after a Tickfaw-area man spotted him in his daughter’s car in Tickfaw, deputies said.
The man held Anthony at gunpoint lying in his driveway until deputies arrived, deputies said. The father also said Anthony had pulled a large hunting knife from his pants when he was confronted, the Sheriff’s Office said.
A subsequent investigation has led detectives to suspect Anthony in burglaries in the Belinda Drive, Stafford Road and Red Hill Road areas, which have been reported by residents over the past two weeks, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Dawn Panepinto, a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman, said today that many of these burglaries involved unlocked vehicles. In Red Hill Road burglaries, money, electronics, tools and firearms were stolen, deputies have said.
Anthony was booked into Tangipahoa Parish Prison in Amite on three counts of vehicular burglary, one count of criminal damage to property and possession of stolen property, deputies said.
Additional counts could be added in other burglaries, deputies said.
