Government-Foster upgrade begins today
Mayor-President Kip Holden is scheduled to break ground today on an $8.68 million project to improve the intersection of Government Street and Foster Drive by adding turn lanes.
The road project is the 15th under the city-parish’s Green Light Program to improve the flow of traffic in East Baton Rouge Parish. Holden said in a news release that the project will play a vital role in connecting downtown and Midcity.
Jose Alvarez, chief construction engineer for the city-parish Department of Public Works, said the project involves adding new left turn lanes for eastbound and westbound traffic on Government Street turning at Foster Drive. There are no left-hand turn lanes on Government Street at Foster Drive now, he said.
The project also includes building an additional left turn lane on Foster Drive for southbound motorists turning east onto Government Street, Alvarez said.
