CHACKBAY — Chackbay Elementary School was cleared of students and faculty for half an hour Tuesday morning while workers repaired a natural gas leak, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office reported.

The leak was caused by a motorist who struck the main gas line while backing out of her driveway at 130 School Lane, Sheriff Craig Webre said in a news release.

ATMOS Gas Co. employees plugged the leak, the sheriff said.

There are 455 students registered at the school. There were no injuries and no further problems are anticipated as a result of the evacuation, Webre said.
