A 29-year-old Baton Rouge man is wanted in the May 5 murder of his grandfather, police said Wednesday.

Dustin Musso, 7361 Airline Highway, is accused of killing his 76-year-old grandfather and setting the man’s house on fire, said Cpl. L’Jean McKneely, a spokesman for Baton Rouge police.

Firefighters discovered the body of Peter Musso at 3:40 a.m. May 5 while putting out a fire at 11624 Glenda Drive, police have said.

Investigators believe the fire was set to cover up the man’s death, police have said. Although
Peter Musso died of smoke inhalation, an autopsy also showed he suffered trauma to his head.

Authorities in Montgomery, Ala., arrested Dustin Musso on May 5 in the theft of his grandfather’s vehicle, McKneely said.

The vehicle was found on the morning of May 5 at the Greyhound Bus Station, 1300 Florida St., police have said.

Dustin Musso boarded a bus bound for Virginia that morning and was detained that afternoon when the bus stopped in Montgomery.

East Baton Rouge Parish court records show Dustin Musso was sentenced to four years in prison in 1999 for stealing his grandmother’s 1989 Acura Legend from 11624 Glenda Drive — the same address where the fire occurred and Peter Musso’s body was found.

Dustin Musso is fighting extradition from Montgomery to Baton Rouge, which means a judge in Alabama will have to order Musso back to Louisiana, McKneely said.

Baton Rouge police will then travel to Alabama, pick up Musso and return him to Baton Rouge where he will be booked into Parish Prison on one count each of first-degree murder, aggravated arson and felony theft, McKneely said.

Charles Musso, one of Peter Musso’s sons, was not available Wednesday for comment. A message left on his cell phone by The Advocate was not returned.
