Attempt to further limit terms killed

A Senate panel Wednesday killed an attempt to further limit legislators’ terms in office.

The Senate and Governmental Affairs Committee voted 3-2 to defer action on a proposed constitutional amendment that would have allowed lawmakers to serve a maximum of three terms over their lifetime.

Currently, legislators are limited to three, four-year terms in the chamber in which they serve. Then, they can run for the other chamber and serve a maximum three, four-year terms there.

State Sen. Buddy Shaw, R-Shreveport, said he proposed Senate Bill 203 after hearing constituents complain that when they voted for term limits they thought they were restricting lawmakers to three terms, period.

“Consider giving your constituents one more shot at this with the privilege of knowing what they are voting on,” said Shaw.

“I do think 12 years is long enough,” said state Sen. Jack Donahue, R-Covington.
State Sen. Ed Murray, D-New Orleans, questioned language in the legislation that seemed to open the door to a lawmaker serving four terms.

Shaw said that was not the intent.

State Sen. John Smith, D-Leesville, moved to defer action on the measure.
