BRUSLY — In an update Monday to the Town Council about preparations for the upcoming hurricane season, Deano Moran, West Baton Rouge Parish homeland security director, said the parish will assume responsibility for the shelters in Addis and Erwinville, previously operated by the Red Cross.

Moran said parish officials were already running the shelters and that officially taking control of them will give the parish the ability to reserve resources for area residents.

The Red Cross will still provide the shelters with food and will operate the Port Allen shelter, he said.

Moran said residents who can fend for themselves should prepare to do so before seeking government assistance.

“People need to be prepared to not have the government come and take care of you for 72 hours,” Mayor Joey Normand said.

During emergencies, Moran said, the parish will be working with more public information officers to distribute daily news releases at fire stations, the multipurpose riding arena on Court Street, Alexander Park and the Erwinville Community Center.

Moran said the mayor will have a radio to use to contact the communications center when telephone landlines are down.

He said residents’ concerns about difficulty crossing La. 1 should be eased this season because the mayor and police chief will be allowed to determine when to resume normal traffic-light sequences after contraflow has ended.
