French Settlement schools locked down Friday

FRENCH SETTLEMENT — Police officers and school officials locked down French Settlement High and Elementary schools for about two hours today after a handgun was found this morning in an unregistered truck in the high school parking lot, authorities said.

French Settlement High Principal Lance Hutson said that at no time were students or faculty in danger and that classes resumed after the precautionary lockdown ended.

The schools, which are next to each other, were closed from 7:35 a.m. to 9:30 or 10 a.m. today, authorities said.

French Settlement Police Chief Harry Brignac said a student borrowed a white truck to drive to school from a friend and did not realize the .40-caliber Smith & Wesson pistol was in a driver’s-side door pocket.

Brignac said Hutson was looking for another truck driven by a different student who was seen speeding earlier this morning and spotted the white pickup.

Noticing the truck was not registered to be in the school parking lot, Hutson looked inside, found the gun around 7:30 a.m. and called authorities, Brignac said.

Port Vincent police and Livingston Parish sheriff’s deputies assisted in the lockdown and investigation, Brignac said.

The lockdown delayed but did not interrupt an annual senior class breakfast for graduating students and their parents, Hutson said.

“It was just pushed a little later. We still had everything. We got it in and got it done,” Hutson said.

Today is the seniors’ last day, a time that also includes a short morning parade, which went on as scheduled.

The student who drove the white truck to school will not be disciplined, Hutson said.

Brignac said that under the law, schools have been declared drug- and gun-free zones.
