Stewart school faculty honored by board
VILLE PLATTE — The faculty of Stewart Elementary School in Basile was recognized at the Evangeline Parish School Board meeting Wednesday.
The school was honored by the State Department of Education as a high performing school in a high poverty area. Superintendent Toni Hamlin said the high performing designation is based on performance scores.
The poverty level is based on the number of student receiving free or reduced lunches.
Hamlin said, “We are proud of the accomplishments that school Principal Christine Bacon and her staff were able to do.”
Stewart Elementary is one of only 20 schools in the state so honored. Its faculty will be invited to functions with State Superintendent Paul Pastorek and the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education on May 21 and June 5.
Bacon credited her teachers’ work ethics and dedication.
“It is their love of the children first and foremost. We have high expectations to meet the needs of our students,” said Bacon, who was accompanied at the meeting by her entire school faculty.
In other business, Hamlin told the School Board that the district will receive $3.4 million in federal stimulus funds. Title I will receive $1.8 million while Special Education will receive $1.65 million. The funding will be for the next two years.
Hamlin said there are no plans to hire any additional personnel or create new positions.
