Man gets 12 years in death
A 22-year-old Baton Rouge man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty in the May 2007 shooting death of a Merrydale neighbor.
Antoine Favors was scheduled to stand trial this week on a second-degree murder charge in the killing of 37-year-old Leroy Foster, but Favors pleaded guilty Monday to a manslaughter charge.
Under Louisiana law, a conviction on manslaughter is punishable by up to 40 years in prison. Second-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
State District Judge Tony Marabella ordered Favors to spend 12 years in prison at hard labor.
East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore III on Tuesday called the plea and sentence a “reasonable resolution.’’ Moore said he had talked with Foster’s family previously and discussed the strength of the case with them.
A drug suspect in an unrelated investigation told deputies he witnessed the fatal shooting, according to an arrest warrant.
Prosecutors said Favors, 7416 Bomer Drive, and another person were involved in an argument in front of Foster’s house shortly before the 4:30 a.m. shooting on May 21, 2007.
After Foster went to his front door and asked that the argument be moved away from his house, Favors shot Foster while Foster stood in his doorway, prosecutors said.
