The St. James Parish school system plans to start a new program to prepare its high school graduates to take the state cosmetology exam and get jobs as licensed cosmetologists.

The St. James Parish School Board this week approved the recommendation to implement a cosmetology program at the Career and Technology Center for next school year .

The new $83,000 program would give students the opportunity to have a marketable trade when they finish school, Superintendent Alonzo Luce said.

“We have been looking at several ideas and solutions to keep our students on track and provide them with opportunities so that they don’t lose hope going forward,” he said.

Outlined by Nolan Albert, director of high school redesign and vocational education for the district, the program is designed to decrease the student dropout rate.

“The typical student isn’t your A or B student or exceptional athletes. They are students that feel they have no hope and no purpose,” Albert said.

“A good cosmetology program,” he said, “will permit our average students to be a part of a program that will allow them to gain employable skills in a high-demand profession that pays well.”

The program to train students to work in beauty shops and hairdressing salons is set to operate in the system’s Career and Technology Center, where marketable skills such as culinary arts and welding also are taught.

Aleshia Smith, a member of the Louisiana State Board of Cosmetology, is scheduled to operate the program.

“After completion of the program, those who are licensed and proficient can earn upward of $60,000 per year,” Smith said.
