Harris pleads innocent in death of lawyer wife
The husband of slain Baton Rouge lawyer Chiquita Tate pleaded innocent Thursday to a second-degree murder charge that accuses him of fatally stabbing his wife at her downtown office in February.
“Not guilty, your honor,’’ 38-year-old Greg Harris said after state District Judge Trudy White asked how he wished to plead to the charge.
Harris was indicted April 9 in the Feb. 19 killing of the 33-year-old Tate. He is accused of stabbing her 38 times in her law office in the State National Life Building on Third Street.
Harris, who was released on a $300,000 bond April 17, also has been booked on other counts unrelated to Tate’s slaying.
Shots were fired April 20 into Harris’ home on Charry Drive in Baker.
His attorney, Lewis Unglesby, said Thursday that Harris is still living at that home.
“He’s doing fine. He’s working,’’ Unglesby said, adding that Baker police have increased patrols in Harris’ neighborhood.
Tate’s body was found the morning of Feb. 20 after Harris called 911 and later flagged down a police officer driving by the office building. He told the officer he was worried about his wife, court records show.
Police said in Harris’ arrest warrant that Tate was planning to divorce him. Unglesby has disputed that allegation.
White said she will hear motions in the murder case on July 23.
