LIVINGSTON — Livingston Parish sheriff’s deputies recovered the body of a Maurepas man who drowned in the lower Amite River early Saturday morning, deputies said Monday.

The body of Kerry Byron, 29, 18461 River Bend Road, Maurepas, was recovered about noon Saturday in the Port Vincent area, Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Jason Ard said.

Also about 4:35 p.m. Saturday, deputies pulled a woman out of the water east of Head of Island after she jumped into the Chene Blanc Canal to get away from her boyfriend, Ard said.

The woman, Carla Junker, of Denham Springs, possibly hit the boyfriend, then jumped in the water, Ard said.

Sheriff’s deputies and Louis-iana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents spotted Junker, whose age was not available, facedown in the canal, Ard said.

She popped up and coughed up water. Deputies and agents were able to get her to the bank, as she went in and out of consciousness, and transport her to an area hospital, Ard said.

On the Amite River, Byron went into the water about 2 a.m. Saturday, and acquaintances concerned for his safety called deputies, Ard said.

Deputies tried to talk Byron out of the water once they arrived, but he refused, went under and began calling for help, Ard said. Deputies got in a boat and tried to rescue Byron but were unable to find him.

 under the water, Ard said.
