About The Advocate series on Poverty
Costs, causes, effects of poverty
Parts of Louisiana suffer some of the highest poverty rates in the country — 150,000 of the state’s 1 million families are poor.
The Advocate is exploring the costs, causes and effects of poverty.
Among the topics The Advocate will examine in the coming months:
- The level of education is directly linked to the extent of poverty. Education experts say poverty is a key reason Louisiana’s public school students score so poorly on national standardized tests.
- A better-trained work force is one of the major goals of Gov. Bobby Jindal. The Advocate will look at the number of people who are trained and how many are able to find jobs.
- Families living in poverty face often stark choices. When a family starts earning enough income to become financially stable, it loses eligibility for programs like food stamps and child-care assistance that helped them get that far.
- People often fall into poverty because of factors beyond their control, such as the scarcity of reliable transportation to jobs and high housing costs.
