The beer industry contributes $2.58 billion a year to the Louisiana economy, according to a study commissioned by national industry groups.

The figure includes direct and indirect impact from brewers, beer importers and distributors, brewer suppliers and retailers.

The study, by the National Beer Wholesalers Association and the Beer Institute, said the industry is responsible for 29,736 jobs with $743.9 million in wages, as well as $172.6 in federal, state and local taxes.

According to the study, the beer industry directly employs 18,073 people in Louisiana, paying them $382.9 million in wages. The 42 beer distributors in Louisiana employ 2,134 people.

Large and small brewers and beer importers employ approximately 185 people. Beer sales help support roughly 15,754 jobs at licensed retailers, which include supermarkets, convenience stores, restaurants, bars, stadiums and other outlets, the groups said.

The study was conducted by John Dunham & Associates based in New York City and covers data compiled in 2008.
