Supriya Jindal promotes math, science

GONZALES — Louisiana’s first lady Supriya Jindal visited G.W. Carver Primary School in Gonzales as part of a continuing effort to emphasize the importance of building a strong foundation in math and science education.

“Science is everywhere; math is everywhere,” Jindal said. “Your speakers, eyeglasses, computers — someone used math and science. It is everywhere isn’t it?”

Two LSU chemistry professors, George Stanley and Julia Chan, joined Jindal in giving Carver’s third- and fourth-graders a chance to participate in science in a real way.

“In a lot of (kindergarten) through sixth-grade schools, teachers talk about science,” Stanley said, “but they don’t do a lot of science.

“Understanding science comes a lot easier if you are doing it.”

Stanley used liquid nitrogen in some of the demonstrations.

Students were able to dip a balloon in the liquid and see the balloon lose its shape as the trapped air condensed. The students also saw liquid nitrogen, when poured onto the gymnasium floor by Stanley and Chan, turn into a solid and then into vapor.

“We want to convince them that science is fun,” Chan said.

She added that it is important to encourage students to study science and math because both fields are important to many industries.

Jindal, who has a chemical engineering degree from Tulane University, talked with students about some of the professions, such as the medical field, that require skills in math and science.

Jindal tries to visit two or three schools across the state each week to promote science and math education, said Kellie Duhon, a spokeswoman for Jindal.
