Nicholls St. stresses French language
THIBODAUX — The French program at Nicholls State University is promoting the resurgence of French language education in Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes with a program scheduled today.
“This region possibly incorporates more French speakers than any other geographical expanse of six contiguous parishes in Louisiana,” Assistant Professor of French Robin White said. “Oddly, support to continue the use of French has been relatively weak in comparison to Lafayette, New Orleans or even Baton Rouge.
“Given that a number of elementary and high school French immersion schools and programs function in the aforementioned cities, it is surprising that the Bayou Region includes only one — Pierre Part Elementary School,” he said.
The Nicholls State program is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today in the LeBijou Theater of the Bollinger Memorial Student Union. Attendees will experience a variety of Francophone voices via presentations, discussions and hands-on activities. There will be a Cajun musical instrument exhibit and musical performances by Mel Baudoin and Mellowberry on the student union portico, organizers said.
The event is free.
