MORGANZA — A Pointe Coupee Central High School student was arrested Monday after multiple witnesses said they saw him with a gun on school grounds, sheriff’s deputies said.
Although no gun was found as of Monday evening, a 16-year-old boy, a student at the school, was arrested on a count of illegal carrying of a weapon on a school campus, said Capt. Steve Juge, with the Pointe Coupee Sheriff’s Office.
The student’s name was not released because of his age.
Sheriff Beauregard “Bud” Torres said the boy was booked into the St. James Youth Detention Center.
The boy is not known to be a troublemaker and Torres called the incident a situation where the boy used poor judgment trying to be cool.
“He wasn’t having any problems with people that we know of,” Torres said. “It doesn’t make a lot of sense.”
Torres said he believes the gun is either still on the school grounds or was removed from campus before deputies got there Monday afternoon.
The arrest capped a day in which sheriff’s deputies put the school on lockdown for several hours after a teacher overheard a conversation among students about the possible presence of a weapon on campus, said Annie Morrison, communications director for the school.
While on lockdown, no one was allowed into or out of the building, and teachers, students and administrators were not allowed to move around the campus, Torres said.
That is “standard operating procedure when we get a call like this,” Torres said.
Around 2 p.m., two hours into the lockdown, deputies searched students and their bags with hand-held metal detectors before dismissing all but a few students for the day, Morrison said.
“We felt it was best to get the students off of campus to prevent any other incidents,” she said.
The remaining students were held at the school for questioning, Morrison said.
