Sorrento council approves review of accounting issues
SORRENTO — The Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday to have the town’s accounting firm review several items identified as problem areas in the most recent audit.
At the end of 2008, Tommy LeJeune of Faulk & Winkler, the town’s accounting firm and auditor, submitted a report to the council containing several recommendations for improvement.
“We had an audit and we need to make sure before we leave office that they (the accounting issues) are corrected because it’s been repetitive year after year,” Councilwoman Troy Braud said.
The town agreed to pay Faulk & Winkler $5,000 for the service, which includes reviews of traffic fine collections, new accounting software implementation, fundraising practices, documents related to surplus property, and other items.
Also Tuesday, the council approved an ordinance requiring police officers to reimburse the town for equipment if they depart within 12 months of their date of employment.
“We have a big turnover in police officers and it costs the town quite a bit of money to outfit them,” Mayor Brenda Melancon said. “If they do not remain for at least 12 months, they have to pay back their initial equipment fees — that’s uniform, badge, you know, whatever it is.”
Also at the meeting, the council agreed to pay $700 to rebuild a sewer treatment pump, including shaft repair and replacement of all bearings and seals.
Members also agreed to purchase four chain saws from Gonzales Hardware for a total cost of $1,396.
