GONZALES — A series of 11 public meetings to explain proposed changes to the Ascension Parish zoning map is set to begin Monday.

“We are going to present maps that reflect zoning changes,” said Ricky Compton, director of the parish Planning and Zoning Department,

“We’re really trying to get the map into the public’s hands,” Compton said.

“Our goal is to get the public’s input in creating a future land-use map.

“We want the public’s vision for the future of Ascension Parish.”

He said the goals of the meetings are:

  • To clean up the zoning map to significantly reduce the number of parcels with multiple zoning designations.
  • To address some sites within the parish that are non-conforming by correcting zoning designations.
  • To introduce Mixed Use 2 zoning designations, which are small-scale commercial and office zones, where it makes logical sense.
  • To attempt to get the zoning map more in line with the transportation network.

“This is a good opportunity to make changes in our zoning maps,” Parish President Tommy Martinez said.

“This is a step toward smart growth. Basically, we’re trying to clean up the mess from the past so we can move forward.

For the  most part, these changes will enhance property values, he said.
