LIVINGSTON — Neither dog fighting nor satanic rituals appear to have been involved in the deaths of a number of animals whose carcasses were found along a creek, Livingston Parish Sheriff Willie Graves said Thursday.

The Sheriff’s Office had a veterinarian check the decomposing bodies of six dogs and additional animals that turned up along a creek off Palmer Road between French Settlement and Colyell, Graves said during a news conference Thursday afternoon.

A man who found his own dog dead at the site reported the matter to the Sheriff’s Office, Chief Deputy Jason Ard said.

A State Police unit that investigates dog fighting assisted in this week’s investigation and also found no signs of dog fighting or ritualistic torture, Graves said.

Most of the dogs appeared to have been hunting and none were pit bulls, the sheriff said.

The veterinarian found that the dogs had been shot in their heads and that some of them had ropes tied around their necks after they died, Graves said.

The sheriff speculated that the ropes may have been tied to the dogs in order to drag them to the site after they had been killed.

Shooting can be an accepted form of euthanasia of animals  so long as it is not done as a form of torture or in a manner that causes the animals to suffer, Graves said.

Unfortunately, a number of people in rural areas dispose of animal carcasses along streams around bridges, he said.

Graves added that his office is continuing to investigate the illegal dumping of the dead animals, which also included the decomposing remains of deer.

The parish’s Department of Public Works is cleaning up the site, Graves said.
