Clinton to study old tower
CLINTON — The Board of Aldermen will look into tearing down the town’s old 25,000-gallon water tower on Jackson Street.
Town maintenance supervisor Otto Kilbourne told members Wednesday the tower is corroded and the footings and support structure are rusted and unstable.
Mayor Donald Reason said a good wind could make the tower come tumbling down.
Reason told the board the Louisiana Rural Water Association, based in Kinder, will survey the town water lines and meters at no charge to determine if water fees are what they should be.
The mayor said the association would make a presentation at the board’s next meeting.
Alderman Johnny Beauchamp said the council looked at costs of removing the tower several years ago, but found out the town would pay more than $100,000 to get the job done.
Beauchamp suggested that the mayor contact the town engineer for a new cost estimate.
On another issue, Kilbourne said that dogs running through the town had become an “outrageous” problem.
Aldermen discussed the matter, but agreed little could be done because of laws requiring humane treatment of the captured animals and veterinary services.
The mayor said he plans to contact a veterinarian to try and find a solution.
