Berthelot stresses stability
PORT ALLEN — The West Baton Rouge Parish president delivered his State of the Parish address Wednesday night, emphasizing financial stability.
President Riley “PeeWee” Berthelot said general fund operating expenditures increased at a lower rate than the Consumer Price Index for 2008 and revenues continued on an upward trend, increasing by 11 percent.
Berthelot said the parish spent $2.8 million on capital outlay expenses and ended the year with an increased general fund balance.
He said industrial activity in the area of capital expansion projects boosted parish sales tax revenue during the year.
The parish expects a healthy job market, despite cutbacks from one of its largest employers, Berthelot said.
In other business, the Parish Council approved the Erwinville Volunteer Fire Department’s request to donate two surplus vehicles to the Ethel Volunteer Fire Department in East Feliciana Parish.
The Parish Council approved several amendments to this year’s budget, resulting in general fund expense increases of $547,540.
